July 30, 2026 · High importance · Infrastructure

The European Commission announced it will fund seven AI gigafactories across the EU with 10 billion euros in public funding, aiming to attract at least 20 billion euros in private investment, increased from an initial five facilities due to strong member-state interest. The sites will integrate advanced AI processors, software, cloud, connectivity, and data centres, with tenders closing November 12 2026 and operations targeted within 18 months of awards. AMD, Nvidia, and Qualcomm have signed letters of intent to supply chips, positioning the EU to narrow the compute gap with the US and China.
